The Publishers Association for Cultural Exchange (PACE) celebrated its 60th anniversary on October 29, 2013, thanks to the support and cooperation received from its members, government-affiliated entities such as the Japan Foundation, and many leading publishers’ association all over the world. On behalf of PACE, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone.
The immediate predecessor of PACE was the Publishers Association for Cultural Exchange in Asia. Against the background of efforts on the part of Japan to escape from the confusion that engulfed the country following the end of World War II, the Association subscribed to the fundamental ethos that cultural exchange was an important factor in developing mutual understanding among the countries of Asia, and its leading figures launched the Association’s activities in 1953 with the adoption of the very apposite remark, “Publications are the silent envoy of diplomacy”, as its slogan.
Three years later, in 1956, the Association was formally dissolved with the aim of improving its structure, and His Imperial Highness, Prince Mikasa, accepted the title of Honorary President of the newly constituted Publishers Association for Cultural Exchange. In the same year, PACE was designated as a corporate juridical person under the auspices of the Foreign Ministry of Japan, and expanded the sphere of its activities to the entire world. At the time of its institution, PACE had 71 corporate members. Five years later, in 1961, it made its debut, with the opening of a Japan booth, at the Frankfurt Book Fair. Since then, with the cooperation of a large number of Japanese publishers, participation in the FBF has played a leading role in PACE’s activities. Today, more than 100 international book fairs are held annually in the different countries of the world. Under a system of joint sponsorship with the Japan Foundation, PACE is represented every year at about 15 of these fairs, at which a total of approximately 6,000 titles are exhibited and introduced to the world.
Remaining true to its fundamental role of providing, through the medium of publications, a bridge between Japan and the rest of the world, PACE carries on its daily activities while surmounting a multitude of financial ordeals. From the bottom of our hearts, we ask for your continuing support and guidance in the future.

 November 25, 2013

Tadakata Egusa
President,
Publishers’ Association for Cultural Exchange
